Gastric Sleeve Q & A

What is gastric sleeve surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery is a safe, effective weight loss procedure that involves reducing the volume of your stomach so you can’t eat as much food per meal. The procedure involves permanently removing about 75%-80% of your stomach, then reattaching the remaining portions, so your stomach resembles a tube or sleeve. Dr. Snow performs the surgery using minimally invasive techniques and small incisions.

Your digestive processes still function the same way they did before surgery, but because your stomach is much smaller, you feel full after eating small portions of food. In addition to reducing your stomach capacity, the procedure reduces your production of the hunger hormone ghrelin. That means your appetite stays under control, and you don’t feel tempted to eat more than your stomach can handle.

Who is a good candidate for gastric sleeve surgery?

Dr. Snow may recommend gastric sleeve surgery for weight loss if you have a BMI over 40 or are at least 100 pounds heavier than your ideal weight. If your BMI is between 30 and 39.9, and you have additional health concerns like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea, gastric sleeve surgery may be the right choice to help you lose weight and better manage these conditions.

Gastric sleeve surgery offers certain advantages over other types of bariatric surgery. You may prefer not to have an implantable device, such as a LAP-BAND®, or undergo gastric bypass, which requires altering the way your digestive system works. At your consultation, Dr. Snow determines if gastric sleeve surgery is the best fit for your needs and preferences.

What results can I expect from gastric sleeve surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery can produce dramatic weight loss results, which can improve obesity-related health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, acid reflux, sleep apnea, and joint pain. Most patients can expect to lose 50%-80% of their excess weight in the first two years following the surgery.

For gastric sleeve surgery to be effective, you need to follow a balanced diet and other aftercare procedures. Dr. Snow advises you on what you can and can’t eat following your surgery and recommends supplements to ensure you meet all your nutritional needs. In addition to closely monitoring your food intake, a consistent exercise routine helps promote weight loss and maintain results after surgery.
