Weight Loss Q & A

How does obesity impact my health?

Obesity, or excess body fat, can take a serious toll on your health. Being overweight or obese puts you at risk for many health problems, which often worsen if you can’t reach and maintain a healthy weight. Obesity-related health problems can impact systems throughout your body, and include:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure and high cholesterol
  • Sleep apnea
  • Bone and joint issues
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Many obesity-related health problems are related, meaning that if you have one, you’re often at risk for several others. Thankfully, losing weight can dramatically improve your health, and weight loss surgery can make that possible even if you’ve struggled in the past.

What weight loss procedures are available?

Dr. Snow is highly experienced in a range of weight loss procedures. Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, continues to evolve as a field. To help you pursue your weight loss goals, he may recommend:

  • Gastric bypass, which involves making your stomach smaller and “bypassing” a portion of your small intestine--so you absorb fewer calories
  • Gastric sleeve surgery, which reduces the size of your stomach
  • LAP-BAND®, an adjustable, removable device that creates a smaller upper pouch in your stomach, so you get full faster

  • Obalon Gastric Balloon System, in office procedure whereby balloons are placed in the stomach, so portion sizes are smaller

These are just a few of the weight loss procedures Dr. Snow offers. At your consultation, he determines what options may be best for you.

Will I gain back the weight I lose after surgery?

A common misconception about weight loss surgery is that you lose a lot of weight at first, then gain it all back. Though it’s possible to regain weight after a procedure, including by stretching out your stomach, long-term weight gain is far from a guarantee.

Think of weight loss surgery as a tool to help you lose weight, not a miracle cure for obesity. When you undergo the procedure, you commit to changing your lifestyle, including by exercising and eating a healthy diet. Though that may sound challenging, it also means that you have control over your weight.

If you find yourself gaining back weight or are otherwise not getting optimum results, Dr. Snow can perform revisional bariatric surgery. This may involve supplementing your first procedure using another technique.
